Guide to Acoustic and Aesthetic Treatment for Rooms
Optimising room acoustics isn’t just about choosing the right equipment—it also involves modifying the environment to enhance sound quality.
Speaker placement is crucial. Speakers should be positioned at least 30 centimetres away from the wall to reduce interference from reflected sound. Subwoofers should not be placed in corners to avoid overly boomy bass.
Acoustic treatment is equally important. Use sound-absorbing materials to minimise echoes—for example, install acoustic panels on ceilings and walls, or opt for soft furniture and curtains to dampen excess sound. Thick carpets on the floor can reduce footstep noise and other environmental sounds. Additionally, installing diffusers or tuning panels can help manage sound waves for improved audio performance.
Acoustic aesthetics are about both sound and visual appeal. Audio equipment should complement the room’s overall décor. For example, choose speaker designs that match the room’s colour scheme or consider hidden/in-wall speaker systems that blend in with the architecture while maintaining optimal sound quality.
